Practical firewood advice
Good storage protects seasoned logs from rain while allowing air to circulate around them.
The essentials
Once firewood has been seasoned, the aim is to stop it becoming wet again. Choose a well-ventilated position, raise the logs off damp ground and protect the top of the stack from persistent rain.
A tightly sealed plastic covering may keep rain off, but it can also trap moisture. Cover the top while leaving the sides open enough for air to move through the stack.
Four simple steps
Use a dry, airy position where the stack receives natural ventilation. Avoid low spots where rainwater gathers and leave a small gap between the logs and a solid wall.
Place the first layer on a solid rack, pallet or suitable bearers. Keeping logs away from damp soil and standing water helps protect the whole stack.
A roof or top cover should shed rain without enclosing the sides. Secure loose covers so they do not blow against the stack and block ventilation.
Stack logs securely but avoid packing them so tightly that air cannot move. Keep the area tidy and check occasionally for a slipped cover or signs of trapped moisture.
Before lighting
Move a small supply into a dry indoor log basket shortly before use, keeping it a safe distance from the stove or open fire. Do not stack fuel against a hot appliance.
